Thoraya Ahmed Obaid
Ms. Obaid led the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) from 2001 to 2010. She served as Director of the UNFPA's Division for Arab States and Europe from 1998 to 2001. Originally from Saudi Arabia, Ms. Obaid is a champion of women’s and young people’s heath.
Before joining UNFPA, she was Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. Ms. Obaid was the first Saudi Arabian woman to receive a government scholarship to study at a university in the United States. She has her doctorate degree from Wayne State University.
