Bleeding for 1 Month: the Reality of Unsafe Abortion

What’s the cost of 89 million unintended pregnancies?

In 2017 alone, nearly 1 out of every 2 pregnancies the developing regions will be unintended. That’s an estimated 89 million pregnancies that women do not want or that come too soon.

As a Pathfinder supporter, you know that behind these numbers are the stories of real women and girls — and the costs to them, their families, communities, and nations.

A nurse from Mozambique, Tania knows what happens when women and girls do not have the power to decide when or whether to have children.

In this video, she shares a story with you.

“Unsafe abortion is a reality,” Tania says.

Stories like the one Tania tells in this video are far too common—especially in places like Mozambique, where even with a recent law change, abortion is still very much taboo.

Abortions are still carried out in back rooms, sometimes at the hands of a traditional healer or an untrained provider—and can be painful, dangerous, and deadly.

Local providers like Tania are working to change this. And Pathfinder is by her side.

Last year, through our programs around the globe…

The young girl in Tania’s story had a right to these services. Her life depended on it.

“I really want to see more information shared with communities—about contraceptives and safe abortion,” says Tania.

We wholeheartedly agree.

The clock is ticking. With 89 million unintended pregnancies and counting, we don’t have a minute to waste. Help us reach more women with services they need to protect their health and choose their own path forward.

Every girl deserves the same choice.

Your gift can make a world of difference in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights for women, men, and young people around the world.
