Making a Difference: Strengthening a Comprehensive and Integral Response against Tuberculosis in Peru
Pathfinder is in the second phase of this Global Fund project, which contributes to universal prevention of tuberculosis for highly vulnerable populations, as well as the care, treatment, and full support of those affected by tuberculosis.The project will complement activities that are currently underway in Peru to fight against both tuberculosis in Lima-Callao and selected regions through escalating promotional and preventive activities by standardizing access to complete diagnosis, treatment, and support for those affected; and by strengthening community participation as part of the national response to tuberculosis.
This project advanced the promotion of respiratory health and the prevention of TB among government authorities, educational institutions, teachers, and students.
Pathfinder strengthened local capacity for the promotion and administration of the WHO-endorsed immunization list in three districts of Lima.
To reach students in grades 10-12, Pathfinder worked with Bayer Shering Laboratories on the peer development strategy in 10 schools in Lima to increase students' awareness of sexual reproductive health and adopt healthy and responsible behaviors to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
The Integrated Family Health Program received praise from Ethiopia’s Technical Advisory Committee, entrusted with reviewing the performance of the program, on the increase in institutional deliveries within the program areas.
It’s only been a year since Pathfinder, UNFPA, and Peru’s Ministry of Health first introduced Implanon in Peru, but Pathfinder’s Peru Country Representative, Dr. Miguel Gutierrez, says the country is already seeing a rapid increase in the method’s use.
