Pathfinder Responds to Cyclone Idai in Mozambique

On March 14, category 4 tropical cyclone Idai made landfall in the district of Dondo in Mozambique’s Sofala province. The port city of Beira, home to 500,000 people, was severely damaged leaving the population isolated without electricity, communications, or road access. As of March 28, the cyclone has caused at least 400 deaths & displaced more than 136,000.

We are  on the ground

Pathfinder’s team in Beira, Manica, and Tete are working around the clock, sometimes without electricity, to provide the following support:

  • Supporting multi-partner response coordination together with the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health, and fellow aid organizations
  • Conducting assessments at health facilities and accommodation centers to identify critical needs
  • Procuring and providing supplies like solar lamps, surgical gloves, and new register books
  • Preventing infectious disease outbreaks by sharing information about sanitation and hygiene and distributing water purifiers
  • Continuing to provide family planning counseling and services to people in the affected areas
  • Working alongside community health workers to ensure ARV medications are available to clients and be able to link them to the services they need
