Strengthening Communities through Integrated Programming

Across 15 districts of Nampula province, Pathfinder implemented the Strengthening Communities through Integrated Programming project to improve families’ health and overall wellbeing by delivering a targeted package of interventions that included health; HIV and AIDS; water, sanitation, and hygiene; nutrition; and agriculture.

Project Date: 2009 - 2016
Funder: USAID
Country: Mozambique

700,000+ deliveries performed at health facilities

900+ community leaders trained in the importance of male involvement in sexual & reproductive health, nutrition, and water and sanitation

Acute malnutrition rates dropped from 8% to 1.7%

17 million + contraceptive methods distributed, including pill, IUDs, condoms, injectables, & implants

What We Did

  • Expanded access to information and services for sexual and reproductive health, maternal and child health, HIV, malaria, clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
  • Created a bridge between communities and distant health facilities—mobilizing community leaders to promote health-seeking behavior, improving referral systems, and deploying mobile outreach brigades to deliver health care locally
  • Built the skills of clinical providers and helped facilities secure supplies and resources, so clients can access the quality, lifesaving care they urgently need
  • Brought together four international partners—CARE, the Cooperative League of the USA, Population Services International , and World Relief—to deliver real, lasting change
