Working Together with Communities: A Case Study of IFHP and Ethiopia’s Health Extension Program

The Health Extension Program (HEP) is an innovative health service delivery approach designed by the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) that is delivering universal coverage of primary health care. It is a package of basic and essential promotive, preventive, and curative health services designed to improve families’ health status with their full participation. Serving as the main entrance to the health system, the HEP targets households and is implemented at the health post level. A health center, its satellite health posts, and the primary hospital at the woreda level constitute the primary health care unit.
