Tell the Next President: Stop global violence against women

Gender-based violence is the “shadow pandemic” of our time. Violence against women and girls has skyrocketed during COVID-19, with instances of domestic violence escalating 30-60% worldwide as an increasing number of women and girls are quarantined with their abusers.

Tell the next President – regardless of who that is – that you want to make ending global violence against women and girls a top priority during their first 100 days in office.

Pathfinder has joined coalition partners in urging our next President to develop a 100 day action plan – to establish a $300 million fund, and designate a presidential task force to address the issue of gender-based violence worldwide.

Sign our letter to the U.S. presidential candidates, demanding they take swift and decisive action to protect our world’s most vulnerable women and girls.

Dear Presidential Candidates,

For every month of COVID-19 lockdown, another 5 million women and girls will suffer from gender-based violence. Gender-based violence (GBV) significantly keeps women and girls from fully realizing their potential — personally, socially, politically, and economically. It threatens their livelihoods. It is a human rights violation and a public health crisis.

Despite some advances in the efforts to prevent and respond to GBV over the past few decades, the U.S. has stepped back its leadership on this issue, and has repeatedly omitted and ignored requests for GBV funding and resources.

We urgently need American leadership to provide a strong international response to ending this “shadow pandemic” of GBV globally. The first 100 days of the U.S. government in 2021 will be critical in undoing the harm of governmental neglect and the lack of funding for these initiatives. It will be critical to address the dual challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and GBV worldwide.

I join Pathfinder International’s call for you to help women and girls survive this crisis and build a healthier, more resilient world.

About Us

Pathfinder has worked to improve health systems by advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for 63 years. Our staff are part of the communities where they work and invested in making things better. They know what works and what doesn’t.

From global networks to national influencers to local community-based organizations, women, youth, and adolescents—we work strategically and diligently to bring about policy changes that support access and funding for SRHR. Especially now, during this global crisis, when women and girls need these services more than ever. Through our local partners in Nigeria, we quickly learned that cases of gender-based violence were skyrocketing during COVID-19 lockdowns. We worked with those partners to reopen health centers and gender-based violence support centers, despite the lockdowns.

With your partnership, we’ll keep pushing for women and girls to have the services they need despite every barrier they have before them—even a global pandemic.
