A Global Gag Rule legislative update from our Global Affairs Executive Director.

It’s a busy summer on Capitol Hill! As you’ve seen, we’re working hard to get the Global HER Act passed during this session of Congress. It’s the best chance we’ve ever had to get it done and end the harmful Global Gag Rule forever.

So far, more than 4,300 of you took action with us, signing our petition to Congress and sending emails to President Biden. And it’s working! On July 1, the House Appropriations Committee advanced the FY22 State and Foreign Operations appropriations bill, which includes the permanent repeal of the Global Gag Rule. We now have strong, bipartisan support for the Global HER Act with 51 Senators and 186 Members in the House cosponsoring.

This solid showing in Congress is because of YOU. Thank you for voicing your support and getting us so close to the finish line. We can’t let up on the pressure now!

You can help by sending a thank you tweet to SFOP Chairwoman Barbara Lee or emailing President Biden if you haven’t already.

– Crystal Lander, Pathfinder Global Affairs Executive Director

The Global Gag Rule is a policy created by President Reagan to limit funding to countries providing crucial sexual and reproductive health services. It threatens access to lifesaving health care — safe abortion, HIV prevention, even child nutrition — for millions of women and girls around the world under every Republican president since 1984.

Repealed in January by the Biden administration, it’s gone (for now), but the threat still looms large for the next American president who decides to play politics with the rights and lives of people around the world.

The Global HER Act would permanently revoke the Global Gag Rule.

Safe Abortion = Health Care

  • When access to abortion is restricted, the health and lives of women and girls are at risk.
  • There are more thank 35 million unsafe abortions worldwide every year that leads to many injuries and preventable maternal deaths.
  • Restricting access to comprehensive abortion care does not curb the number of abortions – in fact, it does the opposite.

Take More Action

Thank you for standing up for women’s right to health care and their right to lead the lives they choose. To make our voices heard by leaders in Congress, we must build a strong, dedicated coalition of support. That means we need your help to spread the word, and to thank those members of Congress who already endorse the legislation.

Thank you for taking action. Ready for the next step?

The last four years – 2020 especially – moved the needle backwards on the global health challenges we’re dedicated to solving. Access to lifesaving health services like safe births, clinic-based abortions, and contraception became ever more scarce, putting the women and girls we serve at even greater risk.

Stand at our side in 2021 with a monthly gift to help build a healthier, more equitable world for women and girls – no matter what this year brings.

Start your monthly commitment and make a difference for the women and girls we serve every single day of 2021.

About Us

Pathfinder International is driven by the conviction that all people, regardless of where they live, have the right to decide whether and when to have children, to exist free from fear and stigma, and to lead the lives they choose. As a global health organization with locally led, community-driven programs, we support women to make their own reproductive health decisions.

We work with local partners to advance contraceptive services, comprehensive abortion care, and young people’s sexual and reproductive rights in communities around the world—including those affected by poverty, conflict, climate change, and natural disasters. Taken together, our programs enable millions of people to choose their own paths forward.

With your partnership, we’ll keep pushing for women, girls, and young people to have the services they need despite every barrier they have before them—even a global pandemic.
