As the world grapples with the challenges of engaging young people in critical conversations about their health and wellbeing, innovative approaches are emerging as game-changers. One such approach is edutainment—the use of entertainment and popular culture to educate and inform. Recently, Pathfinder Nigeria partnered with GAMIVAL, a carnival of games in Abuja, Nigeria, to promote the FC2 Female Condom Project and provide valuable information to young people.
The GAMIVAL carnival offered a unique opportunity to reach a large audience of young people in a relaxed and engaging environment. With over 50 fun and engaging games, music performances, and entertaining activities, the event was a melting pot of youth from different walks of life. By partnering with GAMIVAL, Pathfinder Nigeria was able to effectively promote the FC2 Female Condom and provide valuable information to the target audience.

So, why is edutainment an effective approach for reaching young people?
For one, it allows for a more relaxed and engaging environment, where young people feel comfortable and receptive to new information. Edutainment also enables Pathfinder to tap into popular culture and trends, making health and wellbeing information more accessible and relatable. It also gives opportunity for young people to engage with critical health information in a non-traditional setting. Rather than relying on conventional methods such as classrooms or clinics, edutainment allows for a more creative and interactive approach. This is particularly important for sensitive topics such as sexual and reproductive health, where stigma and shame can often prevent young people from seeking information and services.
This effort is just one example of Pathfinder’s commitment to innovative and effective approaches to sexual and reproductive health. By leveraging edutainment platforms like GAMIVAL, we can reach more young people with critical health information and services, empowering them to make informed choices about their bodies and their futures.
About the Project
Pathfinder is implementing the FC2 Education and Promotion Project Africa to address knowledge gaps and barriers to accessing FC2 information and services. The project aims to reduce risky behaviors that lead to STIs and unintended pregnancies among young people.
