New Podcast: The Springboard!

Women Building What the World Was Missing

In our inaugural episode of the Springboard podcast, we gathered visionary leaders who are at the forefront of driving women’s health and agency worldwide. In this post, we’ll explore the insights shared by Kate Roberts and Suha Lalani, focusing on their journeys, the barriers women face, and innovative solutions that can bridge the gaps.

Meet Our Guests: Champions for Women’s Health

About Kate Roberts

Kate Roberts, a seasoned advocate for women’s leadership and health, has dedicated over 30 years to championing empowerment through various organizations. She is the founder of the Body Agency Collective, which is focused on making essential health products and services accessible to women. Kate’s journey began at a young age, influenced by her experiences around the globe, and is marked by a commitment to filling gaps in health and empowerment for women.

About Suha Lalani

Suha Lalani embarked on her mission after experiencing personal loss due to late-stage breast cancer in her family. She founded PinkDetect, Pakistan’s first AI-powered breast health app, aimed at closing the awareness and early detection gap for breast cancer. Her background in biomedical sciences informs her approach to tackling healthcare challenges, emphasizing the need for systemic change and women’s agency in their health journeys.

Breaking Down Barriers: Insights from the Leaders

Systemic Challenges

Both Kate and Suha emphasized the interconnected barriers women face globally. From cultural norms that devalue women to fragmented healthcare systems, the obstacles are multifaceted.

  • Cultural Norms: Kate pointed out that many societies still do not value girls, impacting their access to education and health services.
  • Healthcare Access: Suha noted that even when awareness exists, the pathways to screening and care are often complex and fail to take into account the agency women lack in determining their own healthcare.

Empowering Women Through Agency

A critical insight from the discussion was the importance of agency. Women must be active participants in their health decisions rather than passive recipients of care. Suha’s work with PinkDetect aims to create a supportive environment that encourages women to take charge of their health.

  • Innovative Solutions: By leveraging technology, PinkDetect aims to bridge the gap between awareness and action, offering women a user-friendly experience for breast health screening and information.
  • Narrative Change: Kate highlighted the role of storytelling in empowering women, enabling them to share their experiences and challenges, thus fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.

The Role of Innovation in Healthcare

Technology as an Enabler

Both guests recognized that technology can play a pivotal role in transforming healthcare access. With the proliferation of smartphones, innovative solutions can be developed and scaled to reach underserved populations.

  • AI and Healthcare: The speakers mentioned the potential of AI to streamline processes and make healthcare services more accessible and affordable. This technology can cut down on the need for extensive workforce resources, allowing for a more efficient delivery of services.
  • Continuous Learning: The lessons learned from past health crises like COVID and HIV/AIDS can inform future interventions, ensuring that innovations are responsive to the needs of women.

Conclusion

The inaugural episode of The Springboard podcast provides valuable insights into the challenges and innovations surrounding women’s health. As Kate and Suha demonstrated, addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach that prioritizes women’s agency and leverages technology.

Now more than ever, it’s essential to empower women with the knowledge and resources they need to advocate for their health. For further insights, listen to the full conversation and stay tuned for more episodes. Available on Spotify here.
