Reflections from GHPC 2024: Amplifying Community Voices in Climate and Health Action

The Global Health Practitioner Conference (GHPC) 2024 served as a powerful reminder of what we at Pathfinder International have long known: when communities lead, transformative change happens.

Our delegation from Kenya, Bangladesh, Tanzania, and Pakistan didn’t just share programmatic successes – we witnessed firsthand how our commitment to community-led solutions resonates across borders and cultures.

Communities at the Heart of Change

Through our presentations and discussions, one truth emerged consistently: communities are not just beneficiaries of our programs – they are the architects of sustainable solutions. From the shores of Lake Victoria to the coastal regions of Bangladesh, our work demonstrates that when we truly partner with communities, we create lasting impact.

Evidence in Action

In Tanzania, we shared compelling evidence of community transformation through Felician Luchagula’s presentation on “Population, Health, and Environment” showcasing how local communities, particularly women, are leading climate-resilient initiatives. Just as we’ve seen in our fishing villages where women-led “model households” have revolutionized sustainable practices, our GHPC discussions reinforced that community ownership drives success.

Women Leading Change

The conference’s focus on “Communities, Climate and Collaboration” perfectly aligned with our experience that women’s leadership is crucial for community resilience. Sharon Odhiambo’s presentation on integrating gender, health, and environment in the Lake Victoria region demonstrated how women are not just victims of climate change—they are powerful agents of transformation.

INtersecting Pathways to Impact

Our participation in GHPC 2024 highlighted how our four key pathways intersect to create comprehensive solutions:

  • Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Through sessions led by our team, including Muhammad Bakhsh Khaskheli and Nabila Chowdhury, we explored how climate change impacts access to essential health services. Their insights from Pakistan and Bangladesh showed that when communities lead the response to climate challenges, SRHR services become more resilient and accessible.
  • Climate and Health Resilience Our breakout discussions revealed that building climate-resilient health systems requires more than technical solutions—it demands deep community engagement. As we’ve seen in our work across regions, when communities understand and own climate adaptation strategies, health outcomes improve dramatically.
  • Women’s Economic Empowerment and Leadership The conference reinforced our conviction that women’s economic empowerment is crucial for climate resilience. Through our sessions, we shared how women-led initiatives, from sustainable farming practices to community health programs, create ripple effects of positive change.
  • Health Systems Strengthening Our experiences shared at GHPC demonstrated that strong health systems must be built from the ground up, with communities at the center. The rich discussions in our breakout sessions showed how local leadership strengthens health system resilience in the face of climate challenges.
Looking Forward: A Call to Action

As we reflect on GHPC 2024, we are energized by the partnerships formed and lessons shared. Our experience reinforces that gender-responsive climate action isn’t just an option – it’s a necessity. When we invest in women’s leadership, strengthen community systems, and build inclusive governance structures, we create pathways for lasting change.

The Power of Collaboration

The conference reminded us that no organization can tackle these challenges alone. Our discussions with partners from across the globe reinforced the value of collaborative action. Whether it’s working with local governments to strengthen health systems or partnering with community organizations to implement climate-resilient programs, partnership amplifies our impact.

Our Commitment

At Pathfinder, we remain committed ensuring that our programs continue to empower communities to lead their own development journey.

As we move forward, we invite partners to join us in this crucial work. Together, we can build a future where communities are empowered, health systems are resilient, and women’s leadership drives sustainable change.

The message from GHPC 2024 is clear: when we trust in community leadership and invest in local solutions, we create pathways to lasting impact. This isn’t just our approach—it’s our proven route to sustainable change.
