Statement in Response to Leaked Majority Draft Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization

Lois Quam, CEO, Pathfinder International
Tuesday, May 3, 2022

A decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in the United States would be unconscionable and stands in direct opposition to the work Pathfinder does around the world to further sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Any ruling that would undermine reproductive rights in such a significant way will reverberate around the world, compromising women’s rights globally and the U.S.’s standing in the world.

If this draft becomes the majority opinion, it will remove the federally guaranteed option of safe and legal abortion in the U.S. Millions of Americans will soon need to cross state lines in search of their lost rights—an option that’s out of reach for those without the resources to travel.

Three things are certain if Roe v. Wade is overturned: First, the U.S. will be choosing a path of regression, becoming only the fourth country in 28 years to restrict abortion rights. Second, many women will suffer and die from unsafe abortions. And finally, the burden of this ruling will disproportionately impact people of color and those with the least resources.

We cannot let this happen.

For decades, Pathfinder has worked closely with our local partners around the world to ensure that where the law allows for it, health systems can offer quality, safe, comprehensive abortion. We have partnered with communities to overcome the stigma and barriers that result in women and girls suffering and dying from unsafe abortions. And, we have advocated for the removal of legal barriers to safe abortion care in different countries and contexts.

Globally, Pathfinder will continue this essential work, while helping to build collective resolve in the U.S. for a permanent legislative solution preserving the right to choose safe abortion.

We know that women’s rights, health, and lives are at stake. We will not stop fighting for them.
