Project Goals
Increase access to comprehensive maternal health care
Improve quality of maternal health care along the continuum of care
Strengthen health system sustainability
Overview
The Maternal Health Strengthening Initiative in Morogoro Region aims to improve access to quality maternal health care in four high-burden districts: Morogoro DC, Mvomero DC, Mlimba DC, and Gairo DC.
These districts span the largest geographical coverage and contain a challenging terrain of rivers, forests, swamps, and hills. Coupled with sparsely located dispensaries, the landscape complicates emergency referrals and often leads to delays in accessing emergency obstetric and newborn care. These districts are also home to 46% of women of reproductive age and 44% of annual births in Morogoro.
The project will build on Pathfinder’s existing Comprehensive Postabortion Care (cPAC) and Postpartum Family Planning (PPFP) project to sustainably improve access to quality maternal and newborn health services along the continuum of care.
The project will be implemented in 60 high-volume public and private not-for-profit facilities (3 hospitals, 20 health centers, and 37 dispensaries) within the four districts.
