Landscape Review of Family Planning Programming for Adolescents and Youth in Bangladesh

Pathfinder’s Accelerating Universal Access to Family Planning (AUAFP) project, known as Shukhi Jibon in Bangladesh, aims to increase utilization of FP services through universal health coverage, reaching those most in need of FP services and information—districts and divisions with lower modern contraceptive prevalence rates.

This review presents a national snapshot of FP programming for young people in Bangladesh and is being used to inform AUAFP programming. The review first looks at the status of adolescent and youth reproductive health and the Government of Bangladesh’s response to adolescent and youth FP needs, including gender considerations.

The review confirms that Bangladesh’s public health system has historically had a dearth of adolescent- and youth-friendly FP programs; lacks knowledge about adolescent and youth sexual behaviors; lacks data on adolescent and youth reproductive health needs and effective interventions; and, that there are numerous political, logistical, and social barriers for married adolescents who wish to access contraception.
